Synopsis: Following a bloody battle against foes on every side, Paige Mahoney has risen to the dangerous position of Underqueen, ruling over London’s criminal population.

But, having turned her back on Jaxon Hall and with vengeful enemies still at large, the task of stabilizing the fractured underworld has never seemed so challenging.

Little does Paige know that her reign may be cut short by the introduction of Senshield, a deadly technology that spells doom for the clairvoyant community and the world as they know it . . .

My Review:

This review is spoiler free to those who have read the first two books, The Bone Season (review here), and The Mime Order (review here).

Once again, Samantha Shannon delivers a masterpiece!! I think this book may be my favourite of the series so far!

The Song Rising was packed with action the whole way through, enhanced by the journey into other Scion citadels and the introduction of many new characters.

Paige is unconventional and sassy, but one of the reasons why I love her so much is that she is real. She is a queen who doesn’t always know the way forward, who struggles with the pressure of doing what’s right yet pleasing her people at the same time, and who doubts her own ability to properly lead. Paige is also haunted by memories of a war-torn past and friends turned foe. All of these things make her even more strong and admirable.

We met so many new characters, from Paige’s Mime Order Commanders, to leaders of clairvoyant society in other citadels – all who added a different element to the story. It was interesting to see how Scion affects places other than London, which pleases me that there is much more of that on the horizon for Book 4!

Samantha Shannon has written this society to be a diverse one, with a lack of sexism as well, which I think is wonderful. I was pleasantly surprised at the seemingly even mixture of both males and females in roles of leadership, and how the female leadership didn’t seem to be a matter of protest, even by gang members of the syndicate who I would expect the opposite from normally.

Also, I absolutely love Paige and Warden as a couple! I think they compliment each other so well, and I want to see so much more of them in the next book!!!

It is evident how much time and effort went into making this book what it is, and I adore every piece of it! I will also cry if I have to wait more than a year for the next book!! I believe everyone needs to pick this series up, because it is fantastic!!

My Rating:

5-stars
